Phi Kappa Phi 2018 Fellowship Deadline Approaching

By Victoria Robertson on March 14, 2018

According to a recent press release, the Phi Kappa Phi fellowship deadline is quickly approaching and, if eligible, you should ensure you apply as soon as possible.

For those of you unfamiliar with the honor society, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest as well as most selective collegiate honor society and is open to all academic disciplines.

Every year, the society inducts nearly 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni and it holds more than 300 chapters in colleges and universities across North America as well as the Philippines.

The honor society was founded in 1897, and since then has been limited to invitation only applicants that fall within the top ten percent of seniors and graduate students as well as the top 7.5 percent of juniors. For faculty and alumni, induction into the society is based on achievement of scholarly distinction.

The mission statement, “To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others,” rings true to this day, and helps to enhance your resume.

For this reason, it’s important to note that this year’s fellowship application deadline is April 16. The honor society will be awarding six fellowships, valued at $15,000 each and 51 fellowships of $5,000 each to students nationwide.

This fellowship, created in 1932, is the society’s “signature award,” and allocates a grand total of $345,000 annually to college students.

This fellowship competition is open to all active members who are full-time students in a post-baccalaureate program of study (during the upcoming academic year).

As far as the selection process goes, applicants are judged based on graduate potential, undergraduate academic achievement, service and leadership experience, letters of recommendation, personal statement of educational perspective and career goals, as well as acceptance at an approved graduate or professional program.

All active chapters may submit one candidate from local applicants to compete society-wide. The national deadline is April 16, but the chapter deadlines vary, so check with your local chapter for more details.

According to Rosalyn Stilling, the recipient of a Fellowship in 2017, “I am incredibly humbled and honored to be selected as a Fellow of Phi Kappa Phi. I am thankful to have support for graduate studies as I continue to follow my passion for literature and the positive social change it can incite. With the help of Phi Kappa Phi, my dream of pursuing a career in writing and research is one step closer to becoming a reality.”
